In most of the waterways in and around the UK , while carrying out underwater searches in the mud at the bottom, the diver cannot see anything at all. Even powerful torches have little use as the mud simply reflects the light back like fog does to car headlamps. The result is that the underwater serch divers employ search patterns using ropes and weights, and feel their way along the bottom of the river. Owing to the unpleasant and foreign environment some underwater search divers have to work in, training dives are undertaken regularly to maintain the skill and confidence level required when searching in zero visibility. The health hazards associated with undeter search diving in polluted water have to be addressed and divers wear dry suits and full face masks to minimise the risks of infection from water-bourn diseases.
